From the very beginning, e-Xstream has been working closely with both rubber suppliers as well as tire manufacturers. This on-going cooperation ensures the development in DIGIMAT of homogenization techniques for industrially relevant rubber composites, as well as accurate validation of DIGIMAT functionalities.
DIGIMAT is able to deal with the great matrix-inclusion stiffness contrasts that occur in rubber composites. DIGIMAT further allows the user to incorporate large deformations, in which case the inclusion's shape and orientation is updated according to the extent of deformation.
DIGIMAT offers a variety of hyper-elasticity models: neo-Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin, Ogden, Storakers, Swanson. These models can be used to analyze composites with rubber matrix or with rubber inclusions, such as rubber matrix with silica or carbon black particles, rubber matrix with steel fiber inclusions, rubber-blend: rubber matrix with rubber inclusions.
The DIGIMAT platform contains several modules that are perfectly suited to model rubbers materials and their composites:
DIGIMAT-MF is used as a “numerical material lab machine” to predict the mechanical properties (E, Stress-strain curve,…) of homogeneous or reinforced rubber "material point” that is equivalent to a material test sample like an ASTM tension test dumble. It uses Eshelby Mean-Field homogenization techniques to model a hyperelastic rubber matrix with reinforcements, or a matrix with rubber inclusions.
DIGIMAT-FE is also used as “numerical material lab machine” to predict the behavior of a rubber composite, namely by constructing a detailed geometrical model of the composite microstructure (Representative Volume Element). This geometrical model is then meshed semi-automatically and the corresponding Finite Element analysis allows a detailed post-processing of the stress state inside the composite.
DIGIMAT to CAE: the functionality of DIGIMAT-MF can be interfaced with CAE software (Abaqus) in order to combine state-of-the-art DIGIMAT-MF material modeling with industrial CAE analysis.
In short, the DIGIMAT platform offers basic and advanced tools for homogeneous or composite materials with rubber matrix or rubber blends, taking account of all relevant material behavior.
